Decidedly multisided

A foreign visitor to the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City contemplates the devastation of the Vietnam War

One American’s endorsement of the War Remnants Museum It never ceases to amaze me how many foreigners deride the War Remnants Museum as “one-sided.” When I first visited the museum in 1999, I was shocked by the skill of its curators who managed to thoroughly chronicle the war in all its gruesomeness without dehumanizing the American troops responsible for so many atrocities. I realize now that the adverse reaction of foreigners to the museum merely [...]

Some things make no sense

Foreign tourists at the Hon Tam Island in Khanh Hoa Province’s Nha Trang Town

It is true that I have seen problems continue over the years, both as an expat and as just someone trying to live day to day and I ponder what it would take to resolve them. There isn’t a day goes by that someone isn’t dealing with their Visa. The government’s policy seems to have changed so often and the desirable ease that one would like to have for remaining in an adopted country to [...]

Why I’ll never return to nomadicmatt.com again

“Know about the world,” Matt Kepnes wrote in a piece entitled How to Travel the World Like Indiana Jones. “Read. Learn how to speak languages other than your own. Read the history of the places you’re visiting. Learn about their current events.”

A cooking innovation we should be thankful for

The World Health Organization describes primitive cooking stoves as the world's top environmental killer

On Thanksgiving, we cook and, if we’re doing it right, we give sincere thanks for being alive. But we rarely think of how the two really interact. We don’t recognize that in many parts of the world, cooking provides not just nourishment and pleasure but sometimes harm and death. Thankfully, there’s a solution on the way. The consequences of cooking may be the least-known major health problem in the world. According to the World Health [...]

Harvard’s walkout students misunderstand economics

Harvard’s walkout students misunderstand economics

What’s wrong with Ec 10? The dozens of Harvard University undergrads who walked out of the school’s famous introductory economics course this month think they know. The students’ general criticism is that Ec 10, in which some 700 students are enrolled, “espouses a specific — and limited — view of economics.” Their specific criticisms are that economics as taught in this class, formally called Economics 10, failed to prevent the financial crisis and does nothing to [...]
