Itinerary

Day 1 Phnom Penh

Hello and welcome to Cambodia! Arrive in Phnom Penh, where the vibrant energy and lively streets contrast with the serene temples that stand amidst modern developments. Once known as the Paris of the East, this city, ravaged by years of civil war, is now emerging from its past and rediscovering its former charm. Our hotel is centrally located in this dynamic city. Join us for a welcome meeting at 5 pm, followed by an optional group dinner. Your stay in Phnom Penh will be at a conveniently situated family-style hotel.

Day 2 Phnom Penh

This morning, we embark on a cyclo (bicycle rickshaw) tour to discover some historic landmarks along the riverfront. Following this, you'll have free time to explore at your own pace. In the afternoon, we'll travel by remork (local tuk-tuk) and boat to a Mekong Island, where you can observe the local way of life centered around silk weaving, agriculture, and aquaculture. Our day concludes with a scenic boat cruise, offering a stunning sunset view at the confluence of the Tonle Bassac, Tonle Sap, and the Mekong Rivers.

Day 3 Battambang

Today, we travel by private bus through the picturesque countryside to Battambang, a journey of approximately 4.5 to 5 hours. Along the way, we'll make a stop to observe local pottery-making. Battambang, Cambodia's second-largest city, is a charming riverside town with hints of French sophistication, warm Khmer hospitality, and well-preserved colonial architecture. After checking into your accommodation, we'll take a remork ride to a local family's home for a delicious home-cooked Cambodian dinner and an insightful discussion about life in Cambodia.

Day 4 Battambang

Enjoy a half-day bike ride through the scenic countryside surrounding Battambang. Along the route, we'll visit local rural industries, including those producing sticky rice cooked in bamboo, rice paper, dried bananas (similar to roll-ups), and fish paste. The ride is easy and ideal for exploring the tranquil countryside. Helmets, smaller bikes, and a bike attachment known as a “tag along” are available for children, and a remork (local tuk-tuk) is provided for those who prefer not to bike. The total riding distance is 25 km (15 miles). In the afternoon, you have the option to experience the Bamboo Train, a charming and popular attraction. Originally used for transporting goods and people, this wooden and bamboo carriage, powered by a small engine, travels at a maximum speed of about 15 km/h and can be quickly disassembled to allow passing vehicles. Your accommodation in Battambang is a conveniently located family-style hotel.

Day 5 Siem Reap

After breakfast today, we'll check out of our hotel and travel to Siem Reap by private minivan. Along the way, we'll stop at Angkor Silk Farm, where you can witness the entire process of silk production—from cultivating food for the silk worms and breeding them to extracting and spinning the silk, traditional dyeing, and weaving. Angkor Silk Farm is part of the Artisans D’Angkor, a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing Cambodian arts and creating job opportunities in underserved rural areas. Siem Reap, the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Angkor Archaeological Park located about 7 kilometers away, also offers plenty to explore. The town boasts vibrant day and night markets, Khmer massage and spa services, a variety of excellent cafes and restaurants, and even fish massages!

Day 6 Siem Reap

After breakfast, our local guide will meet us and lead us through the impressive temples of Angkor. Constructed between the 9th and 12th centuries, these temples were designed to reflect the cosmic universe, showcasing perfect alignment and symmetry. Along the way, you might encounter monkeys that frequent the temple ruins. Today's tour features Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument; Ta Prohm, the jungle temple renowned for its appearance in Tomb Raider; and Bayon, notable for its 54 towers adorned with over 200 mysterious smiling faces.

Day 7 Siem Reap

Today, explore the beautiful Banteay Srey, also known as the "Citadel of the women". This small temple showcases some of the most exquisite classical Khmer art, intricately carved into its pinkish sandstone walls. Additionally, consider a visit to the Landmine Museum, established in 1997 by Aki Ra, a former child soldier. The museum's mission is to educate visitors about Cambodia's history with landmines and to inspire action towards positive change. Enjoy lunch at Bong Thom homestay before heading to the Banteay Srei Butterfly Centre. Here, witness a vibrant live display of Cambodia's diverse butterfly species. Local families participate in sustainable butterfly farming, emphasizing forest conservation and environmental stewardship. In the evening, after dinner, experience Phare, the Cambodian Circus. Originating from disadvantaged backgrounds, these performers have gained international acclaim for their artistic prowess. Like a Cambodian version of Cirque Du Soleil, their performances blend theatre, music, dance, acrobatics, juggling, aerial acts, and contortion, showcasing modern Khmer stories.

Day 8 Siem Reap

Today marks the day of departure, and no specific activities are scheduled. If you’re still interested in exploring, your three-day temple pass grants you the opportunity to revisit Angkor Archaeological Park at your leisure. Your guide can assist you in arranging a remork or car for your trip. If you have some extra time, consider booking a Khmer Cooking Class, visiting Tonle Sap Lake – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, enjoying high tea at the Raffles Hotel, or simply unwinding by the hotel pool.

Where to Eat in Son La - 🍜 Where to Eat in Son La (2025 Guide): Local Flavors, Cozy Cafés & Highland Comfort Food Son La might not be Vietnam’s most talked-about food destination—but that’s exactly why eating here feels so special 😌. This northern highland city doesn’t chase food trends or viral dishes. Instead, it quietly serves honest local flavors, comforting Vietnamese classics, and a few surprisingly characterful cafés that make travelers linger longer than planned. If you’re visiting Son La in 2025, food won’t overwhelm you with endless options—but the right places will give you a real taste of the region, especially when paired with cool mountain air and unhurried days. In this guide, I’ll walk you through where to eat in Son La, what to try, and how to enjoy the local food scene like a traveler who knows where to look 👣. 🌄 Eating in Son La: What to Expect Before diving into specific spots, it helps to set expectations. Son La’s dining scene is: Simple, local, and unpretentious 🍚 Focused on Vietnamese staples Influenced by Thai ethnic cuisine More about substance than style You won’t find trendy fusion restaurants or upscale dining streets here—but you will find warm bowls of pho at sunrise, hearty stir-fries after a long day, and cafés that feel like they belong exactly where they are. 🏨 Hotel Restaurants: Convenient and Reliable Let’s start with the easiest option—your hotel. Both Cosy Hotel Son La and Hanoi Hotel Son La offer perfectly passable on-site restaurants, which are especially useful: After arriving late by bus 🚍 On cold or rainy evenings When you just want a no-effort meal The food here leans toward: Vietnamese comfort dishes Simple breakfasts Familiar flavors for travelers While these restaurants won’t be the highlight of your culinary journey, they’re clean, reliable, and convenient—and sometimes that’s exactly what you need in the highlands. 🍙 Don’t Miss This Local Specialty: Thai Black Rice (Com Gao Cam) If there’s one local food experience you shouldn’t skip in Son La, it’s Thai black rice, known locally as com gao cam 🌾. This traditional dish: Has a deep purple-black color A slightly nutty, earthy flavor Is often served plain or with simple accompaniments 📍 Where to Find It Look for com pho stalls at the south end of town—especially small, no-frills places frequented by locals. These stalls often serve: Rice dishes Simple soups Seasonal local specialties Black rice is more than just food—it’s part of Thai ethnic culture, and trying it in Son La feels authentic in a way that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. ☕ Dong Nat Café – Son La’s Most Characterful Coffee Spot 📍 Address: 17 Ngo Quyen Street (off To Hieu)📞 Phone: +84 97 585 8989💰 Price Range: $$ Also affectionately known as the “Junk Café”, Dong Nat Café is one of those places you don’t expect to find in a provincial mountain town—and then you’re really glad you did 😍. 🎨 Atmosphere & Vibe This café embraces a shabby-chic aesthetic that feels almost transplanted from Hanoi’s quirky coffee scene—but with a distinctly Son La soul. Expect: Mismatched furniture Vintage odds and ends everywhere A relaxed, slightly chaotic charm Sunflower seed shells scattered across the floor 🌻 It’s not polished—and that’s exactly the point. ☕ Drinks & Experience The drinks are solid: Vietnamese coffee (hot or iced) Simple teas Casual café-style beverages But the real draw here is atmosphere. It’s a place to: Slow down Chat with fellow travelers Watch local life drift by In 2025, Dong Nat Café remains a rare find in Son La—a space with genuine personality rather than a copied concept. 👥 Best For: Coffee lovers ☕ Digital nomads passing through Travelers craving character over comfort Anyone tired of generic cafés 🍜 Duc Trong Restaurant – Everyday Vietnamese Comfort Done Right 📍 Address: 147 Truong Chinh Street📞 Phone: +84 97 380 6076💰 Price Range: $ Located right in front of the Hanoi Hotel, Duc Trong Restaurant is one of those places that quietly earns loyal fans—locals and travelers alike. 🍲 What’s on the Menu? This welcoming eatery serves: Pho for breakfast 🍜 Stir-fried dishes Light soups Classic Vietnamese staples Everything here is familiar, comforting, and prepared with care. It’s not flashy, but it’s dependable—and when you’re traveling, that matters. 🌅 Perfect Timing Duc Trong is especially good for: Early morning breakfasts Quick lunches between sightseeing Casual dinners without fuss If you’re staying at the Hanoi Hotel, this spot is practically an extension of your stay. 🥢 What Else to Eat in Son La (2025 Tips) Beyond named restaurants, Son La rewards travelers who: Walk around Eat where locals eat Aren’t afraid of simple-looking places 🍢 Street Food & Local Stalls Keep an eye out for: Small noodle stalls Rice-based meals Seasonal vegetables Grilled meats in the evenings Menus are often limited—but what’s served is usually fresh and satisfying. 🌶️ Flavors to Expect Son La cuisine tends to be: Mild to moderately seasoned Less sweet than southern food Hearty and warming—perfect for the climate 💡 Practical Eating Tips for Son La (2025) A few things that make dining smoother: ✔️ Eat Early Many local places: Open early Close earlier than big cities Dinner after 8 pm can be limited. ✔️ Cash Is King Small eateries and cafés often: Don’t accept cards 💵 Prefer small bills ✔️ Ask Your Hotel Hotel staff can: Recommend trusted local spots Point out seasonal specialties Help with language barriers ✔️ Don’t Rush Food in Son La is part of the slow rhythm of life here. Take your time—it’s part of the experience 🧡. 🌿 Final Thoughts: Eating Well in Son La Son La may not boast a famous food scene, but that’s exactly its charm. In 2025, eating here is about: Discovering local staples Enjoying quiet cafés with personality Tasting dishes rooted in ethnic traditions Letting go of expectations and embracing simplicity From a bowl of pho at Duc Trong, to black rice at a local stall, to sunflower seeds crunching underfoot at Dong Nat Café—these small moments add...Where to Stay in Son La - 🏔️ Where to Stay in Son La (2025 Guide): Best Accommodation for Comfort, Views & Local Charm If you’re planning a journey into Vietnam’s northwest highlands in 2025, Son La deserves a place on your map. This laid-back mountain city isn’t about luxury overload or flashy resorts—it’s about fresh air, rolling hills, ethnic culture, and waking up to misty countryside views 🌿. That said, choosing the right accommodation in Son La can completely change your experience. After several visits and countless chats with fellow travelers, drivers, and hotel staff, I’ve narrowed down the places that truly stand out—not just for comfort, but for atmosphere, value, and location. In this guide, I’ll walk you through where to stay in Son La, focusing on two of the most reliable and traveler-friendly hotels, while also sharing practical tips, 2025 updates, and honest insights you won’t find in generic listings. 🌄 Why Accommodation Matters in Son La Son La isn’t a city where you spend all day inside your hotel—but after long bus rides, mountain motorbike loops, or village visits, a clean, comfortable place to recharge is essential 😌. Most travelers come here for: Exploring Thai and H’Mong villages 🧺 Mountain scenery and cooler weather Cultural performances and local food A quiet stop between Hanoi, Mai Chau, and Dien Bien Phu Because the hotel scene is still modest compared to major tourist hubs, knowing where to stay saves you from disappointment—and helps you enjoy Son La for what it truly is. 🏨 Cosy Hotel Son La – A Pleasant Surprise in the Highlands 📍 Address: 2 Lam Son Street📞 Phone: +84 212 366 6789🌐 Website: cosyhotelsonla.com💰 Price Range: $ (Budget–Mid) Let me be honest: Son La isn’t exactly famous for charming hotels. That’s why Cosy Hotel Son La feels like such a win ✨. Despite its modest name, this hotel is unexpectedly spacious, well-designed, and—most importantly—immaculately clean. For travelers who value comfort without unnecessary frills, this place hits the sweet spot. 🛏️ Rooms & Comfort The rooms are: Bright and airy ☀️ Generously sized (by Son La standards) Spotlessly maintained by genuinely cheerful staff Beds are comfortable enough for deep sleep after a long mountain day, and hot water works reliably—a detail you’ll appreciate more than you expect in the highlands 🚿. 🍽️ Food & On-Site Convenience One major plus in 2025: you can eat and drink right at the hotel. This is a big deal in the evenings when you might not feel like hunting for restaurants after sunset. The menu leans toward: Vietnamese comfort food 🍚 Simple breakfasts Drinks and light meals Nothing fancy—but reliable, clean, and convenient. 👥 Who Should Stay Here? Cosy Hotel is ideal for: Independent travelers Couples on a northern Vietnam loop Motorbike travelers 🏍️ Anyone seeking good value without compromise If you like places that feel easy, relaxed, and honest, this hotel fits perfectly. 🏔️ Hanoi Hotel Son La – Classic Comfort with the Best Views in Town 📍 Address: 228 Truong Chinh Street📞 Phone: +84 212 375 3299💰 Price Range: $$ (Mid-range) If you’re looking for the best overall hotel experience in Son La, this is it—even if the competition is limited. The Hanoi Hotel Son La has long been considered the city’s top option, and in 2025, it still holds that title for one key reason: space and views 🌄. 🛌 Rooms & Layout Rooms here are: Spacious and comfortable Well-suited for longer stays Clean, functional, and quiet One insider tip: ask about the suites on the upper floors. Sometimes they’re available for nearly the same price as standard doubles, and the upgrade is absolutely worth it. 🌅 Countryside Views That Actually Wow From higher floors, you’ll get: Wide-open views of rolling hills Early morning mist drifting over the valley Golden light at sunset 🌄 In Son La, this kind of scenery is half the reason you came—so staying somewhere that showcases it makes a big difference. 💼 Facilities & Services While not luxurious, the hotel offers: Reliable reception service Comfortable common areas A more “established hotel” feel It’s especially popular with: Business travelers Small tour groups Couples wanting extra comfort 👌 Best For: Travelers who prioritize space and views Those wanting a slightly more polished stay Visitors staying multiple nights in Son La 📍 Location Tips: Where to Stay in Son La City Both hotels are conveniently located within Son La city, making it easy to: Rent a motorbike nearby 🏍️ Visit local markets Arrange village tours Catch onward transport In 2025, most travelers still rely on: Hotel reception Local guides Trade Union–connected services So staying at a well-connected hotel really helps. 💡 Practical Accommodation Tips for Son La (2025) Before booking, keep these real-world tips in mind: ✔️ Book Ahead in Peak Seasons During: National holidays Autumn travel months Festival periods Rooms can fill faster than expected—even in Son La. ✔️ Ask About Upper Floors Especially at Hanoi Hotel—views matter here. ✔️ Don’t Expect Luxury, Do Expect Warmth Son La hotels shine through: Cleanliness Friendliness Local hospitality ❤️ Not marble bathrooms or infinity pools. ✔️ Use Hotels as Local Connectors Many hotels help with: Transport rental Village visits Cultural performances English-speaking guides Sometimes asking at reception is more effective than searching online. 🌿 Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Stay in Son La Son La isn’t about five-star indulgence—it’s about authentic northern Vietnam, fresh mountain air, and cultural depth. And the right hotel makes all the difference. Cosy Hotel Son La is perfect if you want comfort, cleanliness, and great value. Hanoi Hotel Son La is your go-to if you’re chasing space, views, and a more classic hotel feel. In 2025, both remain reliable, traveler-approved options that let you focus on what really matters: exploring, slowing down, and enjoying the rhythm of the highlands 🌄. If Son La is on your route, stay a little longer than planned—you might be surprised how much it grows on you 😊.
