🦇 Mahatup Pagoda (Bat Pagoda)

Located about 2 km south of Soc Trang off Le Hong Phong, the Mahatup Pagoda, also known as the Bat Pagoda, is famous for its large population of golden-bodied fruit bats. These bats become a spectacular sight as they take flight at dusk, filling the sky with their dark wings. The pagoda itself has undergone restoration since a 2007 fire destroyed much of the main structure, and a beautiful pond has been added behind the temple, enhancing the tranquil surroundings.

🌅 Best Time to Visit:
To truly experience the bat spectacle, plan to arrive around 5:30 pm. As the temperature drops, the bats begin to wake and you’ll witness them spinning, preening, and taking to the skies. Their wingspans can reach up to 1.5 meters, creating a fascinating display.

🧘‍♂️ Historical Significance:
The Mahatup Pagoda has been a place of worship for Khmer monks for over 400 years. The pagoda is often bustling with Vietnamese visitors, who come to admire the bright murals that depict the life of the Buddha and the names of Khmer communities worldwide who helped fund the construction.

💀 Unique Features:
Outside the pagoda, you’ll find the graves of four pigs, located behind the large hall to the right. These pigs, each with five toenails instead of the usual four, are considered to bring bad luck. To ward off negative energy, they are honored with well-maintained resting places, and their tombstones are painted with their likenesses and the dates of their passing.

🕰️ Opening Hours:

  • Daily: Dawn to Dusk

💰 Admission: Free

🚗 Transportation Tips:

  • Xe Om (motorbike taxis) are the best way to get to the pagoda, as taxis cannot reach the site directly. Negotiate a rate, including waiting time.

Whether you’re interested in the bats, the historical significance, or the unique rituals, Mahatup Pagoda offers a peaceful yet intriguing experience in the heart of Soc Trang.
