Vietnam remains highly sensitive about military zones and strategic areas, including border regions, military camps, bridges, airports, naval bases, and even train stations. Taking photos near these locations may result in authorities confiscating memory cards, deleting images, or issuing fines.
Dangers of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)
Decades after the war, unexploded ordnance (UXO) still poses a significant threat in some areas. Since the war ended, over 40,000 Vietnamese have lost their lives due to UXO incidents. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) remains one of the most affected areas, where local farmers, scrap-metal collectors, and children continue to suffer injuries or fatalities.
To stay safe:
- Stick to clearly marked paths and avoid wandering into unknown areas.
- Never touch or attempt to move suspicious objects, such as old shells or partially buried metal.
- If you encounter UXO, report it to local authorities immediately.
While Vietnam is generally safe for travelers, awareness of these risks is essential when exploring historical or rural areas.
