Renowned for their historical significance in the Vietnam War, the Cu Chi Tunnels constitute a vast network stretching over 250 kilometers. Originating in 1948 to aid the Viet Minh in their struggle for independence against the French, these tunnels evolved over 25 years into an underground city complete with living quarters, kitchens, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, and command centers. Able to accommodate thousands of people, the tunnels served as a subterranean haven for individuals who led remarkably ordinary lives, including getting married and raising families, while residing almost entirely underground.
During the American War, the Cu Chi area was designated as a free fire zone, subject to intense bombing. In 1988, two sections of the tunnels were opened to visitors, providing an insightful and captivating experience. Crafted with functional elements, these structures were designed for long-term habitation.
For those with an interest, an optional opportunity awaits to fire rounds from war-era M16 or AK47 rifles at the nearby firing range (additional fees apply).
