Our first stop is the National Museum, a treasure trove of exquisitely preserved carvings and lintels rescued from the ancient temples of Angkor. We then visit the magnificent Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda, adorned with shimmering treasures. Our tour continues to Wat Phnom, a serene temple perched on a hill, marking the city's legendary founding place. In the afternoon, we delve into the poignant history of Cambodia at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a haunting reminder of the Khmer Rouge's atrocities. Formerly a high school, it was transformed into the regime's main interrogation and torture center. We also pay a visit to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a glass tower filled with human skulls serves as a powerful memorial to honor the victims of Pol Pot's brutal regime. We set off early in the morning for our journey to Siem Reap. Along the way, we stop for a delightful lunch. Later in the day, we venture to the enchanting Tonle Sap Lake. Here, we board a private charter boat for a leisurely cruise through the captivating floating village of Chong Kneas. Witness the stilt houses, bustling floating markets, and an array of boats that make this place so unique.
Over the next three days, our itinerary may be adjusted by our knowledgeable local guide to ensure an optimal experience (avoiding crowds, aligning with sunsets, etc.). Angkor, a remarkable testament to the Khmer kings, flourished between the 9th and 13th centuries, with a peak population of 750,000. Spread across 155 square kilometers, the Angkor complex boasts magnificent stone temples, elegant sculptures, and breathtaking bas-reliefs. Our exploration begins with a visit to the Rolous group, comprising some of the earliest temples in the area. In the afternoon, we marvel at the exquisite carvings of the small yet stunning Banteay Srei temple. As the day draws to a close, we find ourselves at East Mebon, where we witness the awe-inspiring sunset from Pre Rup temple. Note: The specific temples visited may vary to enhance your experience.
Our journey continues with an exploration of the temples built by the illustrious King Jayavarman VII, revered as one of Angkor's greatest rulers. Angkor Thom, his fortified city constructed in the late 12th century, is encircled by a square wall adorned with five grand gates adorned with stone elephant trunks. Once home to crocodiles, its moat now surrounds colossal statues of 54 divine protectors. Within Angkor Thom lies a true gem - The Bayon. Though less imposing from afar compared to Angkor Wat, The Bayon enthralls with its intricate labyrinth of corridors, gothic towers, and enchanting central temples. Our journey includes the Terrace of the Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper King, the Baphuon, Phimeanakas, and neighboring temples such as Preah Khan.
On our final day, we visit the temples of the second Angkor capital, including Prasat Kravan, Banteay Kdei, and Takeo. A highlight for many is the atmospheric Ta Prohm temple, famously featured in the movie Tomb Raider, where nature and ancient architecture intertwine. We save the grandest and most awe-inspiring sight for last: Angkor Wat. Here, we marvel at its unparalleled beauty until the sun sets, bidding farewell to our extraordinary adventure.
Our tour concludes with breakfast at our hotel in Siem Reap. There are no planned activities for today, allowing you the freedom to depart at your convenience. If your flight departs later in the day, our hotel provides luggage storage facilities. For those wishing to savor their remaining time, you can explore the bustling Old Market for last-minute treasures or indulge in afternoon tea at The Foreign Correspondent's Club.
