This morning, embark on a cycling adventure through the heart of the Vietnamese capital (approximately 22kms) with a knowledgeable guide. Hanoi, with its vibrant street life and bustling traffic, is ideally explored by bike. Pedal through parks, along lakeshores, and down tree-lined boulevards, visiting iconic landmarks like the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex. This complex features the Buddhist temple One Pillar Pagoda and the former residence of Vietnam’s renowned revolutionary figure, Ho Chi Minh. Explore the lively Old Quarter, an architectural showcase reminiscent of a 1930s provincial French town, with blocks of ochre buildings. Within the ancient '36 Streets,' uncover an array of shops offering everything from souvenirs to exquisite silk clothing, jewelry, intricately embroidered tablecloths, wood carvings, and lacquerware – a haven for bargain hunters. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. Consider a stroll around the picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake, reflecting modern office buildings, ancient Buddhist temples, and the labyrinth of historic streets. Alternatively, delve into cultural exploration at the Vietnam Fine Art Museum or The Vietnamese Women’s Museum. Conclude your day with a steaming bowl of fresh Pho from a hidden gem street eatery – the street food in Hanoi is a culinary delight not to be overlooked! Riding distance: Approximately 22kms/14 miles, mostly flat with around 40m/130ft of elevation gain, on well-paved roads.
Gear up for today's cycling expedition as the adventure unfolds. Bid farewell to Hanoi and embark on a bus journey to Hoa Binh (approximately 2 hrs). Upon arrival, hop on your bike and pedal 40 km to Cao Phong, traversing small ethnic Thai villages. Immerse yourself in the serenity of paddy fields and engage with local communities. Majestic limestone peaks form a scenic backdrop, and verdant banks line the route. Make regular stops to appreciate the vistas across lush valleys. After reaching Cao Phong, take a brief 30-minute bus ride to Man Duc for lunch. Following this, the bus will transport you to the Da River Reservoir. Continue your cycling journey along the Da River, passing striking karst cliffs, traversing paddy fields, and enjoying panoramic views of the Mai Chau valley (approximately 20 km). Nestled in a breathtakingly beautiful valley surrounded by lush green mountains, the tranquil town of Mai Chau is renowned for its stunning scenery and warm hilltribe communities. Tonight, experience local hospitality in a modest stilt-house homestay in the village of Poom Coong. Your welcoming hosts will prepare a delightful meal, and there might even be an opportunity to sample the local rice wine crafted in the region. Riding distances: Ride 1 - Approximately 38 km/24 miles, uphill with around 330m/1080ft of elevation gain. Ride 2 - Approximately 19 km/12 miles, mostly downhill with about 80m/260ft of elevation gain.
Bid adieu to your homestay hosts this morning and embark on a cycling journey from Mai Chau to Mai Hai, continuing onward to Pu Luong National Park (approximately 46 kms). Traverse more paddy fields, putting your riding skills (or suspension) to the test with the shallow potholes that pepper the road. Witness pineapple farms and farmers atop their loads pulled by lumbering water buffalo. Cycle through small towns, exchanging waves with friendly locals as you traverse the idyllic landscapes of Vietnam – lush green fields, towering limestone mountains, serene waterways, and captivating historic sites. This presents a marvelous opportunity to observe everyday rural life and immerse yourself in the stunning countryside. Riding distance: Approximately 46 kms/29 miles, flat for the first 20 kms/12 miles, followed by a gradual climb for 17 kms/10 miles, with an elevation gain of approximately 540m/1770ft.
Today, divided into two exhilarating rides, you will pedal your way from Pu Luong to Cuc Phuong National Park – Vietnam’s inaugural and largest national park, inaugurated by Ho Chi Minh himself. It stands as one of the country's most vital conservation sites, boasting a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The cycling journey unfolds amidst breathtaking scenery, with limestone karst peaks emerging from tranquil rice paddies. Weather permitting, you may opt to explore the renowned Hang Múa caves and viewpoint. Resume cycling for another 28 kms, leading to a well-deserved lunch. Afterward, hop back into the support vehicle for a smooth journey to Tam Coc. Renowned for its emerald waters punctuated by sandstone islands and caves, Lan Ha Bay is a gem in Vietnam's natural beauty. Adding to its allure, the bay boasts numerous white-sand beaches. Spend the night at a secluded property nestled along the water's edge. If you're up for some exploration, a walking trail offers a brief stroll around the island—worth it for the panoramic views.
