This morning, depart from Thailand's current capital and make your way north via train (approximately 6 hours) and then by private minivan (around 1 hour) to Sukhothai, one of the earliest ancient capitals of Siam. Nestled on a fertile plain, Sukhothai was founded in the 13th century, with its name translating to 'Dawn of Happiness.' Today, it is renowned for its historic park, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, which showcases the Golden Age of Thai civilization. In the evening, don’t miss the chance to visit the intriguing local night market to sample regional specialties, including Sukhothai noodles.
Explore the ancient ruins of Old Sukhothai, beautifully set among tranquil lakes and lush gardens. The art and architecture from the Sukhothai period are regarded as the quintessential Thai style, with the Sukhothai Historical Park showcasing the remnants of 21 significant sites, featuring stunning Buddha statues and four large ponds often adorned with vibrant blooming lotus flowers. Once you arrive at the park, you can rent bicycles and spend a few leisurely hours enjoying the refreshing breeze while delving into the rich history of this captivating location. Relish a homemade picnic lunch during your exploration, and if time permits, consider stopping by a local ceramics factory.
Journey by private minivan from Sukhothai (approximately 4 hours) to the inviting home of Intrepid’s long-time friends in a quaint Thai village, where you'll spend the night. The accommodation at the homestay is simple and shared, featuring fold-out mattresses on the floor and communal bathrooms. However, this experience offers a unique opportunity to connect deeply with the culture and its people. In the evening, enjoy a traditional northern Thai khantok dinner, complemented by live music and dance performances.
In the morning, hop on bicycles and explore the homestay village. This is a wonderful chance to observe local life, with stops to check out small rural industries along the way. As you cycle past lush rice fields and inhale the fresh country air, the stunning mountains in the background create a postcard-perfect scene. After bidding farewell to your new friends, continue your journey to Chiang Mai (about 45 minutes away). Known as the most lively city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai boasts numerous iconic temples and a fascinating old town. Celebrated for its breathtaking beauty and friendly locals, the "Rose of the North" is sure to captivate you. You might find it hard to leave! In the evening, consider visiting the lively night markets.

If you’re a food enthusiast, you’ll uncover some of the secrets behind Thai cuisine, learning about essential ingredients, their uses, and suitable substitutes if you can’t find them at home. You'll leave with a detailed recipe book and enjoy a delicious lunch made from your creations. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Chiang Mai at your own pace. Consider visiting the renowned Doi Suthep temple complex. The climb is well worth it, as you’ll be rewarded with one of Thailand's most stunning temples and breathtaking panoramic views of the city, along with the chance to listen to the soothing evening chants of resident Buddhist monks. Alternatively, you could stroll through markets, meet monks, cruise along the river, and savor noodles on a Mae Ping River experience.

Knowledgeable local guides will provide insights about the elephants, sustainable tourism practices, and conservation initiatives in the region. Enjoy some snacks near the elephants' mud pit, but watch out for any playful splashes! You’ll also have lunch in a riverside pavilion, sharing the space with your gentle giants as they enjoy their meal. Afterward, return to Chiang Mai and have the rest of the day free for your own exploration.
On your final day, there are no scheduled activities, giving you the flexibility to check out of your accommodation whenever you wish.
