Experience the highlights of Laos on this 8-day tour, where you’ll discover the charm of Luang Prabang, the vibrant capital Vientiane, and the scenic beauty of Pakse. Explore the ancient temple complex of Wat Phou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This journey combines cultural exploration with breathtaking landscapes, offering a comprehensive glimpse into Laos’ rich heritage and stunning scenery.
Upon arriving at the airport, you'll be greeted and transferred to your hotel. If time allows, we’ll start with a half-day city tour. We’ll first visit the Royal Palace Museum, which houses a fascinating collection of artifacts. Next, we’ll explore the stunning Wat Xiengthong, known for its distinctive low-sweeping roofs that epitomize traditional Laotian architecture. We’ll also have the opportunity to see the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun, as well as the shrines of Wat Aham and Wat Mai. Spend the night in Luang Prabang.
The day begins with a visit to the Big Brother Mouse shop to select books for our village visit. We then drive north along Route 13, turning onto an unpaved road that leads us to Ban Khia Luang village. Here, you'll have plenty of time to explore the school, interact with the children, and see their excitement as they receive their new books.
We'll also have a chance to explore the village further, observing traditional weaving and visiting the local temple. For lunch, enjoy a choice between a Western-style picnic or traditional Lao dishes such as sticky rice, lap, and fresh vegetables prepared by the villagers.
After lunch, we'll bid farewell to the village and travel to Ban Khoklin, passing through picturesque mountain and rice field scenery. From Ban Khoklin, we'll take a private boat down the Nam Ou River for a 30-minute journey to the Pak Ou Caves, famous for their thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues. We’ll then continue down the Mekong River back to Luang Prabang, arriving by late afternoon. Spend the night in Luang Prabang.
Today, we take a boat across the Mekong River to the charming village of Ban Chan, renowned for its pottery. Next, we explore the morning Phousi Market, where you’ll find a variety of items including dried buffalo skin, local tea, and saltpeter, alongside chickens, vegetables, and traditional hill-tribe weavings. Laos is celebrated for its traditional crafts, and today you’ll visit several Lao ethnic minority villages: Ban Ouay (a Hmong village), Ban Ou (a Lao Loum village), and Ban Thapene (a Khmu village). We’ll then journey to the stunning Kuang Si Waterfall, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the pools or take a leisurely walk along the forest trails. By late afternoon, we’ll return to Luang Prabang for an overnight stay.
You will be transported to the airport in time for your flight to Vientiane. Upon arriving in the capital, you’ll be met and taken to your hotel.
In the afternoon, we’ll embark on a half-day city tour to explore Vientiane’s major temples. We’ll visit Wat Sisaket, the oldest temple in the city, known for its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, and the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo, which once housed the famous Emerald Buddha. We’ll also see the iconic That Luang Stupa and stop for photos at the grand Patuxay Monument, Vientiane’s equivalent of the Arc de Triomphe. Spend the night in Vientiane.
This morning, you'll be transferred to the airport for your flight to Pakse. Upon arrival, you’ll be met and driven west to the Bolaven Plateau. Known for its cooler climate due to its high elevation above the Mekong Valley, the Bolaven Plateau is renowned for its stunning waterfalls. We’ll visit Tad Fan, the most impressive of these falls, where twin cascades plunge into a deep gorge amid lush greenery. This journey offers a pleasant escape from the heat and an opportunity to see the cultivation of coffee, tea, cardamom, bananas, and other crops along the way. In the afternoon, we’ll reach Tad Lo, known for its picturesque waterfall and diverse ethnic minority communities. We’ll explore the villages of Alak, Nge, and Katu before spending the night in Tad Lo.
After an early breakfast, we depart from Tad Lo. Our route includes a brief stop to see Pha Suam waterfall and to visit the ethnic minority villages of Lao Teung. We then proceed by road through Pakse town, crossing the Mekong River by ferry to explore the intriguing pre-Angkorian ruins of Wat Phu, one of Southeast Asia’s most dramatically placed temples. After lunch, we continue our journey by long-tail boat to the 4000 Islands, where you'll have the rest of the day to unwind. Spend the night in the 4000 Islands area.
Following an early breakfast, we travel south by road and boat to Done Khone. Our exploration begins with a look at the French colonial heritage in Ban Khone, where you can still see some old colonial buildings and the remnants of the first Lao railway with its original locomotive. We then continue our journey through the 4000 Islands by boat, visiting the stunning Liphi Waterfall, also known as Samphamith, which acts as a natural border between Laos and Cambodia. Afterward, we return to Ban Nakasang and drive to Khone Phapheng Falls, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia, often referred to as the ‘Niagara of the East.’ Spend the night in the 4000 Islands area.
After breakfast, you'll be transferred back to Pakse. From there, you can catch a flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia, or choose to exit Laos overland through the Chongmek International checkpoint, heading to Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.
