Stay overnight in Mandalay.
We will embark on a journey to explore the cultural highlights of Mandalay, once the capital of the last Burmese kingdom in the mid-19th century. Our first stop is Mahamuni Paya, home to a revered Buddha image that holds great significance in Burma. Devout Buddhists have adorned the 13-foot-high seated Buddha with layers of gold leaf over centuries, creating a surface estimated to be six inches thick.
Next, we will visit the Jade Market, the largest wholesale market for jade and precious stones in Mandalay. This unique market offers an intriguing glimpse into local trade.
Following lunch, our tour continues to Shwenandawkyaung, or the Golden Palace Monastery, a magnificent wooden structure dating back to the 19th century. Known for its intricate wood carvings, this monastery is not only a fine example of traditional Burmese architecture but also a poignant reminder of the old Mandalay Palace, which was destroyed during wartime bombings. We will then proceed to Kuthodaw Paya, home to the world's largest book, where 729 marble slabs are inscribed with the entire Tripitaka, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records.
In the late afternoon, we will visit Mandalay Hill, standing at 230 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the city and a stunning sunset.
Overnight stay in Mandalay.
This morning, we will journey to Sagaing for a day of exploration. Our first stop is Kaung Hmu Daw Pagoda, constructed in 1636 by King Thalon to commemorate Inwa's establishment as Myanmar's royal capital. Nearby, we will explore Soon Oo Pon Nya Shin Pagoda, built in 1312, as well as U Min Thonzeh Pagoda, U Min Chaukzeh Pagoda, and U Min Koezeh Pagoda.
In the afternoon, we will continue our sightseeing at the former imperial capital of Inwa. Crossing the Ayeyarwaddy River by small boat, we will visit Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery, also known as Me Nu Ok Kyaung, a splendid brick and stucco monastery constructed by Queen Nanmadaw Me Nu in 1822. We will also explore Bagaya Kyaung, renowned for its towering structure, and Nanmyint Hmyawzin, or the Nanmyint watchtower.
