Discover the rich history and stunning architecture of Angkor Thom and the serene beauty of Ta Prohm, famous for its intertwining trees and atmospheric ruins. Siem Reap, the cultural hub of Cambodia, serves as our entry point to the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor Wat. Upon arrival, you'll be transported to your hotel. The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy at your own pace.
Today, we delve into the heart of the Cambodian jungle, passing through a pyramid-shaped gateway into an ancient realm. As we cross the causeway over the moat, we are greeted by serene stone faces guarding the spiritual core of Angkor’s lost city. A Local Specialist and esteemed Khmer scholar will unravel the stories embedded in the elaborate carvings and murals of celestial nymphs and mythical serpents that line the deserted corridors of Angkor Wat. Next, we visit the Banteay Srei Temple, known as the "Citadel of Women," dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. We will have the opportunity to admire the 10th-century carvings of women, believed to be too delicate to have been sculpted by a man, hence the temple's name.
In the afternoon, we return to Siem Reap for a walking tour. We will explore Artisans d'Angkor. Following this, we visit Wat Damnak for a private blessing ceremony, where a sacred thread will be tied around our wrists to ward off evil spirits. Our day concludes with a visit to the bustling Old Market, where local vendors sell fresh produce, spices, and baked goods, offering a glimpse into the vibrant daily life and French influences in Cambodia.
Our journey through the remnants of a lost empire continues as we explore more of Angkor's legendary sites that have been overtaken by the Cambodian jungle. We navigate the ancient ruins alongside saffron-robed monks and playful monkeys climbing over the roots of centuries-old trees that have embedded themselves into the city's walls. Our first destination is the fortified city of Angkor Thom, where we’ll visit notable landmarks such as the Terrace of Elephants, the Royal Enclosure, and the Bayon Temple with its colossal, smiling Buddha faces.
We then venture beneath the dense canopy to the weathered, moss-covered ruins of Ta Prohm, a Buddhist temple famously featured in the film ‘Tomb Raider.’ As we explore its towers, courtyards, and corridors, we’ll discover intricate stone carvings concealed by the encroaching foliage. Spend the afternoon at your leisure, or opt for an additional experience to delve into the flavors of Khmer cuisine.
Our day starts with a visit to a local Khmer village, where we'll engage with the residents and tour their school, interacting with some of the children. As we walk through the village, we’ll gain a glimpse into their daily lives. We will Dive Into Culture by exploring their traditional crafts, such as weaving Cambodia’s iconic palm leaf hats and creating delicate Lotus flower art. After a free afternoon to relax, we will gather with our Travel Director and fellow travelers for a Farewell Dinner, complete with a captivating Apsara dance performance.
