Embarking on the captivating Vietnam motorcycle tour to Ha Giang commences at approximately 8 AM from the eastern suburbs of Hanoi. Our endeavor is to skillfully navigate away from the bustling city roads in the morning until we reach Cho Chu town in Thai Nguyen province, where a delightful lunch awaits. Post-lunch, a pleasurable motorbike journey unfolds towards Ba Be Lake, graced with roads that boast minimal traffic and showcase stunning mountain vistas. By around 4 PM, we find ourselves in Pac Ngoi, a picturesque village of the Tay people, peacefully nestled along the shores of Ba Be Lake. Dinner and an overnight stay await us in the embrace of a Tay family's home.
Ba Bể Lake, whose name translates to "Three Lakes" in Vietnamese, stands as the largest natural lake in Vietnam. Situated in Nam Mẫu commune, Bắc Kạn district, Bắc Kạn Province, in the northeastern region, this lake is surrounded by ancient limestone cliffs covered with pristine primary forests. Formed around 200 million years ago, Ba Bể Lake comprises three distinctive zones named Pé Lầm, Pé Lù, and Pé Lèng.
The lake's primary inflows come from three rivers, namely Năng, Tả Han, and Nam Cường, with the Năng river making a majestic entrance through the waterfall known as Đầu Đẳng. Adding to the allure, three islands—Án Mã, Khẩu Cúm, and Po Gia Mải (Widow’s Island)—grace the lake's expanse. Ba Bể Lake not only stands out as a significant geographical marvel but also serves as a biodiversity reservoir, seamlessly integrated into the Ba Be National Park.
