Hanoi – Halong Bay – Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) – Cu Chi Tunnels – Mekong Delta
This journey explores the two distinctive primary cities of Vietnam – the elegant capital, Hanoi, and the vibrant, bustling Saigon – with a particular focus on the country’s culinary treasures. We’ve incorporated a Vietnamese cooking class along with visits to some of our preferred local eateries. Additionally, we explore key attractions in each city and the magnificent Halong Bay for a diverse yet leisurely tour. Opting for our superior option ensures accommodations in the finest hotels in Hanoi and Saigon.
Upon arrival in Hanoi, the esteemed capital of Vietnam, you will be transported to your hotel for a tour briefing. This evening, indulge in a delightful dining experience at one of Hanoi's premier restaurants.
Explore the Ho Chi Minh Quarter, encompassing the mausoleum, Ho Chi Minh's residence, and the One Pillar Pagoda. Proceed to the Temple of Literature, followed by a visit to the notorious 'Hanoi Hilton' prison. In the evening, witness an exclusive water puppetry performance.
Embark on an early start today as we venture eastward (approximately 170km, or 3 hours) to Hon Gai, the entry point to Halong Bay. Along the way, witness the picturesque landscapes of rice fields where diligent workers engage in traditional cultivation methods. Halong Bay gained international acclaim as a prominent setting in the French film "Indochine," featuring Catherine Deneuve. Despite its cinematic fame, the bay has held a significant place in Vietnamese folklore for centuries, captivating the imagination of all who visit.
Upon arrival, transfer to the nearby port for an enchanting cruise around the bay. Recognized as Vietnam's paramount natural wonder, Halong Bay showcases over 3,000 islands emerging from the sea, creating a breathtaking natural panorama. We explore its caves, marvel at its grandeur, and make a stop at one of the secluded bays for a refreshing swim. Seizing the moment, we relish a delectable seafood lunch onboard our boat. In the late afternoon, we return to Hanoi, leaving the evening free for independent exploration.
This morning, make your way to the airport for the flight to Saigon, the vibrant commercial hub of Vietnam and a city pulsating with remarkable energy. Witness the evident rapid modernization of Vietnam in this bustling metropolis. In the afternoon, commence a guided walking tour, exploring the iconic landmarks that define Saigon's rich history. Traverse the heart of the city along Dong Khoi Street (formerly Rue Catinat), passing by the distinguished Rex Hotel, Ho Chi Minh Square, Municipal Theatre, and Notre Dame Cathedral. The tour also includes a visit to the Reunification Palace (formerly the Presidential Palace) and the War Remnants Museum. Following this, venture to Cholon, the city's Chinatown district, where you'll encounter the colossal Binh Tay Wholesale Market, a bustling marketplace offering a diverse array of goods. Conclude the day with a visit to the exquisite Thien Hau Temple, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea.
This morning, engage in a cooking session at the Vietnam Cookery Centre. The class is crafted to be not only informative but also enjoyable and accessible. Participants will have the delightful opportunity to savor the dishes they create. Following a satisfying lunch, venture to Cu Chi. Originating as a strategic response to counter the superior firepower of the French and later the Americans, the Cu Chi tunnel network spans over 250km and extends across three underground levels. This remarkable site offers profound insights into the tactics and unwavering determination of the communist forces during the Vietnam War. For those eager to explore the local nightlife, Saigon offers a diverse array of options to suit every preference.
This morning, embark on a journey southward, venturing into the heart of the Mekong Delta. Along the way, observe farmers tending to their fields and drying their produce on the roadside. Upon reaching My Tho, we embark on a boat for a scenic journey along one of the Mekong's principal tributaries. Our stops include visits to islands like Phoenix or Unicorn, where we engage with local farmers and cottage industries, such as a coconut candy factory and a honey farm. Strolling through tropical fruit orchards, we have the opportunity to sample the fresh local produce. Concluding this immersive experience, we board sampans and navigate the narrow canals of the Delta before making our way back to Saigon via My Tho. Arriving in the mid-afternoon, the remainder of the day is at leisure for last-minute shopping or personal exploration.
Enjoy some leisure time for any final shopping endeavors before proceeding to the airport for your onward journey.
