Embarking from bustling Ho Chi Minh City, our two-week journey spans three countries, offering a captivating and diverse experience. We delve into the majestic remnants of Angkor, traverse the bountiful Mekong Delta, and confront the poignant histories of Vietnam and Cambodia. Venturing off the tourist trail, we immerse ourselves in rural Cambodia, exploring the aromatic pepper plantations of Kampot and indulging in a refreshing boat excursion to a tropical island for relaxation and swimming. Our adventure concludes with a brief yet fulfilling sojourn in Bangkok, where vibrant markets tantalize our senses with an irresistible array of culinary delights. The delectable cuisine of this exotic region is a true gem to savor and cherish.
Upon arrival, take some time to recover from your journey. Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is a captivating metropolis where the clash of bicycles and trucks creates an exhilarating atmosphere. It seamlessly blends ancient temples with modern developments, and despite the devastation caused by the Vietnam War, it has emerged as a vibrant free-market hub where everything is possible. Don't miss the bustling Ben Thanh Market and the exquisite Notre Dame Cathedral. In the evening, our tour leader will provide a welcome briefing, followed by an optional group dinner at a local restaurant. Accommodation: Huong Sen Hotel (or similar).
This morning, we venture beyond the city limits to the Cu Chi tunnels. These intricate networks, spanning approximately 150 miles (240 kilometers) and three levels, were utilized by the Viet Cong during the war. While traditionally narrow, some sections have been widened to allow visitors to experience the system firsthand. If you have claustrophobia, you may choose to enjoy the sunshine outside instead. In the afternoon, we return to Ho Chi Minh City for a guided tour that includes notable sites like the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum, which provides a thought-provoking account of the Vietnam/American War. Please be aware that some of the displayed images are graphic. Accommodation: Huong Sen Hotel (or similar).
Today, we embark on a scenic drive to Cai Be in the mesmerizing Mekong Delta, where we will encounter a temple revered by followers of Cao Dai, an indigenous religion that harmoniously blends elements from various Eastern and Western faiths. Along the way, we traverse breathtaking countryside and make stops at charming cottage industries. Known as the "rice bowl" of Vietnam, the Mekong Delta is renowned for its abundant production of fruits, sugarcane, and coconuts. While the Cai Be floating market has become smaller and less crowded due to the prevalence of truck trading, it still offers a captivating glimpse into traditional market activities. In the afternoon, we indulge in a serene sampan cruise, immersing ourselves in the tranquil beauty of the surroundings. Our day concludes with a delightful dinner on a secluded island, where we savor the warm hospitality of the Delta. Tonight, we will rest at a humble homestay guesthouse designed in the style of a local house. Bedding, mosquito nets, and small towels will be provided. Accommodation: Mekong Homestay Guesthouse.
This morning, we embark on a short village walk, offering us a glimpse into the everyday lives of the locals. Once again, we board our boats and cross the main channel to Vinh Long, where we reunite with our vehicle and continue our journey deeper into the captivating Mekong Delta, arriving at the charming border town of Chau Doc. After settling into our hotel, we embark on a memorable sunset visit to the sacred Sam Mountain. From its summit, we are treated to panoramic views stretching all the way to Cambodia. The evening is free for you to explore the charming town situated on the banks of the mighty Mekong River. Accommodation: Chau Pho Hotel (or similar).
Today, we embark on a scenic drive, approximately one hour, to reach the Tinh Bien/Phnom Den land border, bidding farewell to Vietnam as we cross into Cambodia. Our route leads us to the renowned La Plantation Pepper farm, where we indulge in a delightful lunch while immersing ourselves in the fascinating world of Kampot Pepper. Afterward, we continue our transfer to the charming town of Kampot, nestled along a picturesque river. Upon arrival, we check into our centrally located hotel, serving as our comfortable retreat for the next two nights. In the afternoon, we embark on a local boat, setting off on a mesmerizing sunset cruise along the enchanting Kampot River. This waterway gracefully winds through the heart of the town, creating a unique connection between the land and the sea. Accommodation: Boutique Kampot Hotel (or similar).
Today, we embark on a captivating excursion as we board a local boat for a short journey to the captivating Koh Tonsai, also known as Rabbit Island. Take your time to unwind, bask in the beauty of the island, and create cherished memories. Accommodation: Boutique Kampot Hotel (or similar).
For the early risers, there is an optional walking tour led by your guide to explore the vibrant Kampot fish market before returning to the hotel for a delightful breakfast. Afterward, we bid farewell to Kampot and commence our transfer to the captivating city of Phnom Penh, where we will spend the next two nights. Take advantage of your free time in the Cambodian capital to meander through the traditional buildings, or indulge in shopping at either the impressive Central Market or the sprawling Russian Market, a haven for souvenir enthusiasts. Immerse yourself in the city's charm and unique offerings. Accommodation: Ohana Hotel (or similar).
Today, we embark on a full day of sightseeing, beginning with a visit to the magnificent Royal Palace and the revered Silver Pagoda nestled within its complex. The Silver Pagoda gets its name from the exquisite solid-silver tiles that adorn its floor. Resembling the grandeur and style of Bangkok's Grand Palace, the Royal Palace offers a serene atmosphere, allowing ample time for leisurely strolls among the traditional structures. We then proceed to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, also known as S21, which serves as a chilling testament to the atrocities committed during Pol Pot's regime from 1975 to 1979. Originally a school, this haunting site was transformed into a center for torture and interrogation. A visit to Tuol Sleng provides a somber yet enlightening experience. To conclude our day, we visit the haunting Killing Fields of Choeung Ek in the late afternoon. Spread across an area the size of a football field, these fields bear witness to mass graves where an estimated 20,000 Cambodians, many of whom endured torture, were laid to rest. Phnom Penh, a city in transition, has gradually risen from its tragic past and now showcases restored French colonial buildings. Along the riverfront, a small but vibrant dining and bar scene is emerging, adding to the city's evolving charm. Accommodation: Ohana Hotel (or similar).
Today, we embark on a scenic drive to Siem Reap, a journey that spans approximately eight hours. Along the way, we make a captivating stop at the town of Skuon, renowned for its local specialty - fried spiders. We also pause at Sambor Prei Kuk, an awe-inspiring collection of pre-Angkorian monuments considered among the oldest structures in Cambodia. Immerse yourself in the rich history of this ancient site. A traditional Khmer lunch awaits us at a community restaurant, offering a delightful culinary experience. Afterward, we resume our voyage to Siem Reap. Accommodation: Angkor Holiday Hotel (or similar).
Prepare for a captivating day as we dedicate our time to exploring the remarkable temple complex of Angkor. French explorer Henri Mouhot once marveled at its grandeur, declaring it to be even more magnificent than the wonders of Greece or Rome. This UNESCO World Heritage site stands alongside Chichen Itza and Machu Picchu, earning its place as one of the world's most awe-inspiring archaeological sites. It is a true haven for photographers and a source of enchantment for all who visit. At sunset, we will witness the mesmerizing vista it offers. Our exploration includes the iconic Angkor Wat, an architectural masterpiece, as well as the majestic temples within the royal city of Angkor Thom. Among them, the resplendent Bayon stands out with its 54 intricately carved towers, leaving visitors in awe. A traveler in 1925 aptly described it as a sight that renders one speechless, unlike anything else in the land. We also venture to the lesser-explored outlying temples, such as Banteay Kdei and Ta Prohm, which remains embraced by nature's verdant touch, much as it was discovered. Be prepared to be captivated by their beauty. Accommodation: Angkor Holiday Hotel (or similar).
As the day begins, we delve deeper into the captivating Angkor complex, making our way to the exquisite temple of Banteay Srei. Located 22 miles (35 kilometers) from Siem Reap town, our journey unfolds amidst picturesque paddy fields and charming villages. Banteay Srei, dating back to the 10th century, showcases some of the most remarkable Khmer sculpture, boasting intricate carvings that adorn every building. While smaller in size compared to later temples, its artistic mastery leaves a lasting impression. In the afternoon, you have the freedom to independently explore more of the temples, wander through the streets of Siem Reap, or opt for an unforgettable boat trip to a floating fishing village on the Tonle Sap Lake. Accommodation: Angkor Holiday Hotel (or similar).
An early start marks our departure from Cambodia, as we embark on a longer journey from Siem Reap to Bangkok. The road to the border may take up to three hours, but the transition opens the gateway to a new country. After crossing the border, typically requiring about an hour, we are warmly greeted by our Thai tour leader. Our first encounter with Thailand includes indulging in the flavors of authentic Thai cuisine at a local restaurant. With our appetites satisfied, we continue our journey to the vibrant capital city of Bangkok. Renowned for its bustling tuk-tuks, lively khlong boats, and tantalizing street food, Bangkok presents a sensory adventure and serves as a striking contrast to the serene ambiance of Cambodia. Accommodation: Rembrandt Bangkok Hotel (or similar).
We embark on a captivating adventure as we board a traditional long-tail boat, gliding through the intricate canal network that once earned Bangkok the nickname "Venice of the East." This unique experience offers a glimpse into the vibrant daily life along the river, where local vendors showcase their wares. Our tour continues with a visit to the esteemed Royal Palace complex, the illustrious residence of the Thai royal family. Inside the palace, we find ourselves in awe of Wat Phra Kaew, home to the revered Emerald Buddha, an iconic and highly venerated image in Thailand. Another highlight awaits at Wat Po, the largest temple in Bangkok, where a magnificent gold-plated reclining Buddha statue measuring an impressive 151 feet (46 meters) in length and 49 feet (15 meters) in height resides. Please note that modest attire, covering shoulders and knees, is essential for entry into the Royal Palace. After the enriching exploration, you have the remainder of the day at your leisure to immerse yourself further in the charms of Bangkok. Accommodation: Rembrandt Bangkok Hotel (or similar).
